A Closer Look at Alberta's Lung Cancer Screening Initiative

In Alberta, one in 12 males and one in 13 females will develop lung cancer in their lifetime. This makes the disease a serious concern in our community, particularly for cigarette smokers.

The limited-time Alberta Lung Cancer Screening Program (ALCSP) can help find lung cancer before symptoms develop and treatment becomes more difficult.

Until its completion in March 2024, all Albertans with a primary care provider are now able to self-refer to the program. You may be eligible if you:

  • Are between 50 to 75 years of age
  • Are a current or former cigarette smoker
  • Have a family physician or other primary care provider

If you would like to see if you are eligible for this screening program, call the ALCSP team at 1.866.727.3926. From there, you will speak with a nurse who will review your eligibility criteria and walk you through the next steps of the referral.

Those who are eligible will receive a safe and effective low-dose CT scan that takes a detailed picture of the lungs using a small amount of radiation. The test takes less than 15 seconds and requires no preparation.

Getting scanned has many benefits, including:

  • The potential to find lung cancer in its early stages when it is easier to treat
  • When the cancer is found early, it may be able to be removed surgically or treated with radiotherapy
  • Increasing the chance of survival

Screening locations are available in Calgary, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, and High River. This program is an excellent opportunity to receive a potentially lifesaving screening while it is available.
